Have you ever wondered how advanced the world might be if only we were better at sharing information, and retraining technicians with new advancements as they become available?

Obviously, we're getting a lot better at it now, and the internet certainly helps - but it can still take quite some time for important information to travel around the world, and become the standard practice for professionals in every country.

Maybe I should explain...

Let me tell you about one of my favorite examples, some new techniques for implant dentistry, that even in this modern day and age, have taken years to really catch on despite the obvious benefits.

All the information is easily available, as part of a new series of clinician’s guides from the British Dental Journal or B D J and the British Dental Association or B D A. The particular guide I'm interested in is written by one Dr. Saj Jivraj and provides insight into advanced techniques for implant dentistry and prosthodontics that offer some important benefits for the patient.

I'll admit, I first came across this information when I saw Dr. Jivraj featured on Fox and P B S - so obviously the cat is out of the bag now, and the techniques he discusses are now almost certainly being taught all around the world, but they're new to me.

The clinician's guide is actually a revised and improved second edition and explains both the rationale and best practices for rehabilitating fully edentulous patients... if you're not a professional, that's dentist-talk for "replacing teeth for people who have none."

The new book explores both the traditional graftless techniques and the zygomatic implant strategies that are often effective when the traditional options fail to provide proper support.

It's not just an overview though, it includes detailed information throughout the entire process, beginning with treatment planning and the biomechanics relevant to each treatment option. It also includes step-by-step instructions for the immediate loading of a full arch restoration, using either traditional tilted or zygomatic implant techniques.

Of course, while the clinician’s guide focuses primarily on the implant process, it also offers insight into several other relevant topics, such as the best materials for a full arch restoration, and the laboratory requirements for working with each material. You can also find comprehensive information about the required maintenance for each material, and how to manage complications from either the implant process or the prosthetic itself.

The new clinician’s guide builds on Dr. Jivraj’s previously published work, Treatment Planning In Implant Dentistry, which is also available from the B D J.

So who is this Dr. Jivraj?

Well, I checked, and here's what I found - Dr. Saj Jivraj is a pretty well-published researcher, credited with over 60 journal articles. He's also well known as a teacher of advanced implant dentistry techniques, both nationally and internationally.

Although that's only when he's not working at his own private practice, the Anacapa Dental Art Institute in Oxnard, California, where he specializes in using these advanced techniques himself. He's personally redesigned thousands of new smiles, and calls this technique the All-On-4 procedure, since it provides a fully functional set of natural-looking, implanted dentures, in a single day - using as little as four implanted posts.
