What is the Structured Family Caregiving (SFC) Program?

Funded through Medicaid, the Structured Family Caregiving (SFC) program provides financial support and health coaching to unpaid primary caregivers. Georgia implemented the SFC in 2019, and has seen more primary caregivers now being able to stay at home to care for a loved one. In 2022, the waiver was renewed, with plans to continue providing SFC services into the future.

The SFC is available through care agencies, such as Home Nurse Inc, which has been a trusted partner since 2019. The Griffin-based Home Nurse Inc is currently accepting applications for the SFC.

Who is Eligible to Receive SFC Benefits?

To be eligible for the SFC program:

You should be the primary caregiver for an elderly and/or disabled loved one, meaning you cannot have employment outside the home or run a home business.

You must live in the same home as the person you care for.

You have to be related to them either biologically or through marriage; spouses and legal guardians are not eligible.

The person receiving the care must be Georgia Medicaid-eligible and a participant under the CCSP or SOURCE waiver program.W

hat Daily Tasks Qualify for the SFC?

If you meet the requirements listed above, then you should be able to list all the services you provide to your loved one; these include:

meal preparation

housekeeping

dressing

bathing

personal hygiene assistance

medication management

And pretty much any other daily tasks you do to care for their needs. If you're unsure, you can always check with Home Nurse Inc.

How Do I Apply for the SFC?

Applications for the SFC can be submitted by filling out a form on the Home Nurse Inc website - I'll leave a link in the description so you can check them out.

If your application is approved, you will essentially become a contract employee of Home Nurse Inc, and weekly payments will be sent to your account. Plus, you will also receive coaching and guidance from Home Nurse Inc’s experienced senior care staff.

As much as we don't want to think about it in such terms, caring for a loved one can truly feel like a full-time job and indeed prevent you from having one.
