Not everyone gets the luxury of picking their moving date but, if you are one of the lucky chain-free few, then you may be wondering what time of year you should be scheduling your relocation. Moving at the right time can end up saving you some big bucks so it’s worth planning ahead.

So when is the best time of year to move? Movers.com explains all in their new guide to seasonal moving.

According to a recent study by The American Moving and Storage Association, most moves happen between May and September due to the warmer weather and extended daylight. The guide delves into the popularity of summer moving, analyzing whether moving during peak season really is your best course of action. You may be surprised by the findings!

So you want a date that is going to make your life easy but isn't going to break the bank?

Movers.com highlights the advantages of moving during the summer months, explaining that improved weather can often minimize the risk of damage or injury. During the summer, children are also out of school, so you won't have to disrupt your kids' education in the process. Moving in the summer break will give your children time to adjust to their new surroundings before starting back at school in September.

However, moving during peak season can get very expensive! “Due to popularity, May through September tend to be the busiest months of the year for moving companies, and they typically get booked very quickly, causing their rates to be higher,” explains the guide. During these months, the competition for reputable companies is high, meaning that relocators may need to book their desired moving company months in advance.

If you're hoping for a more budget-savvy move, you might be better off scheduling an ‘off-season’ relocation, says the guide. “April is a good choice because it's at the beginning of the spring but falls just before the moving company's high season. If you have kids, consider their spring break as a time to make the transition.”

If you're lucky enough to live in one of the US's warmer climates then Movers.com recommends December or January for your scheduled move. During these months, rates will be lower and you will have a wider range of moving companies to choose from. It is best to move mid-month on a weekday of your choice, as this is when the demand is usually lowest. The final scheduling suggestion in the guide is to move early in the morning when the weather is cooler and the streets are less busy. Moving early in the day also gives you longer to unload and unpack when you reach your new destination.

So you've chosen the date and now just need to select a moving company to help you transport your worldly goods. Check out the link in the description to find a top company near you!
